Why Hazelwood Is the Perfect Base for Devon Holidays This Autumn
Autumn Devon holidays work best when you can combine the coast, countryside and flexible self-catering without spending every day in the car. At Hazelwood Holiday Park in Dawlish Warren, the beach is around 640 metres away, the Exe Estuary is close by, and our 38 acres give families and couples plenty of space to slow the pace after a day exploring South Devon.
Why we think autumn is a great time to visit Dawlish Warren
Dawlish Warren is not simply a summer beach destination. The National Nature Reserve runs along a 1½-mile sandspit at the mouth of the Exe Estuary, and autumn is one of the periods when the site becomes especially important for migrating and wintering birds.
One of the things we like most about this time of year is how easy it is to build a day around the outdoors without making it too complicated. You can walk from the park towards the beach and reserve, spend some time watching the estuary mudflats, then head back to your accommodation when you are ready.
For families, this can be a particularly easy way to enjoy some fresh air without committing to a full day out. A shorter walk, a bit of wildlife spotting and lunch back at your accommodation can be much more manageable with younger children.

Our advice for autumn walks from Dawlish Warren
One of the advantages of staying with us in autumn is how many days can begin close to the park. You do not always need a long drive or a packed itinerary.
The sea-wall route between Dawlish Warren and Dawlish is around 1½ miles and is largely level, making it a practical choice for a shorter coastal walk. We often suggest using Dawlish as a natural halfway point for lunch or a look around town, then deciding whether you want to walk back or use public transport.
For something longer, the Exe Estuary Trail stretches for around 16 miles between Dawlish Warren, Exeter and Exmouth. You can join the trail directly from the park, so there is no need to tackle the full route. Picking one manageable section usually makes for a better day than trying to cover too much.
Our autumn tip is simple: take a waterproof layer, check the forecast before you set out and choose a route that gives you options if the weather changes.
What to expect at October half term
One thing we always recommend is checking which seasonal facilities are running before you arrive. Our 40ft by 20ft outdoor heated swimming pool normally operates from the end of May to mid-September, so it is not part of an October half-term stay.
That does not mean there is less to do. During school holidays, we advertise children’s entertainment in the early evening, alongside evening entertainment at Paddy’s Bar including our very popular Halloween Party Special. As school holiday dates vary, it is worth checking your own term dates before booking though.
We find autumn breaks work best when you keep the schedule flexible. Plan one bigger day out, leave one day for walking or wildlife, and keep some time unplanned so you can work around the weather rather than against it.
Autumn versus summer at Hazelwood
| Summer | Autumn | |
| Outdoor pool | Our heated outdoor pool normally opens from the end of May to mid-September. |
|
| Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve | The reserve supports breeding wildlife alongside more beach-focused visits. | Autumn is an important migration period, with birds using the Warren as a resting and feeding area. |
| How to plan the day | Beach time and the pool can anchor more of the day on warm-weather trips. | Flexible half-days work well because the beach, reserve, coast path and estuary are all close by. |
If the outdoor pool is a big part of your holiday, summer will suit you better. If you enjoy walking, birdwatching, self-catering comfort and a slower pace, we think autumn has a lot to offer.
Why self-catering works so well in autumn
Autumn weather can change quickly on the South Devon coast, and that is where self-catering really comes into its own. Our Oakwood Lodges include fully equipped kitchens, private parking and landscaped outdoor space, while some also have hot tubs.
That means you can head out for a walk in the morning, come back for lunch if the rain starts, then decide what you fancy doing later. You are not tied to a fixed schedule or relying on eating out every time plans change.
If you are visiting with children, have a look at our family-friendly holidays. You can also explore our full range of holiday homes in Devon to compare the different accommodation options.
Our advice is to think beyond just lodge versus chalet. Consider how much indoor space your group will want, how many separate sleeping areas you need and whether dog-friendly or guaranteed dog-free accommodation is important to you.
Use us as a base for exploring more of South Devon
One of the reasons people choose to stay with us is that you can mix local walks with bigger days out without moving accommodation. Dawlish, Teignmouth, Exeter, Exmouth, Torquay and Paignton can all form part of a wider South Devon break.
Dawlish Warren also has a railway station, and there are bus and train links within walking distance of the park. That gives you a bit more freedom if you do not want to drive every day.
A linear walk can work especially well in autumn. You can walk one way, stop somewhere for lunch, then use public transport for the journey back instead of retracing the whole route.
If you are planning a few bigger outings, our things to do in Devon guide is a useful place to start. We usually suggest mixing one attraction day with one local walking day so the whole break does not become a series of long journeys.
Our tips for making the most of shorter autumn days
Autumn holidays need a slightly different rhythm from summer. There are fewer daylight hours, and the weather can change more quickly, so we recommend getting outside earlier in the day when you can.
If you are planning a longer walk, start in the morning and keep shorter options such as Dawlish, Dawlish Warren beach or the nature reserve for later in the day. That way, you are less likely to feel rushed as the light begins to fade.
For October half term, we suggest packing layers, waterproofs and sturdy footwear, and checking the forecast before you head out. It is also worth keeping one indoor or town-based option in mind in case you wake up to a wet morning.
The benefit of staying with us is that you can change the plan without changing your base. The coast, countryside, local transport and wider South Devon are all within easy reach from the park.
