The Best Dog-friendly Things to do in Devon
If you’re a dog lover or just wondering how many different types of dogs there are, come to Devon. We’re a dog-loving county and here you’ll see just about every breed of pooch and hound going. In fact, we love dogs so much that our days out are often centred around taking our four-legged friend on an adventure. After all, our dogs love a bit of fun just like the rest of us, just look at their tails when you mention walkies. (If you’re reading this out loud and have a dog nearby, we apologise).
Whether you’re a long-term local or visiting for the first time, one thing is certain, you don’t have to worry about leaving your beloved dog at home when in Devon.
So now we’ve established that Devon loves dogs, let’s dig deeper into what dog-friendly things there are to do in Devon.
Beach Time
Dogs and beaches go hand in hand, much like circling seagulls and your ice cream. And in Devon, we have a lot of beaches for you and your pooch to explore. From the long sandy beaches of Exmouth and Dawlish Warren to the pebbly shores of Sidmouth and Ness Cove, hours of digging in the sand, running around and splashing in the sea await (plus lots of fun for your dog too).
Whether you’re looking for a popular beach for your sociable dog or a more secluded bay for a peaceful walk, you’re spoilt for choice, making a beach visit one of the must-do dog-friendly things to do in Devon.
To ensure everyone gets to experience the best of our Devon beaches, please ensure to check the dog policies for each beach as rules vary from beach to beach and throughout the year.
Walk the South West Coast Path
For scenic views and a bit of adventure, the iconic South West Coast Path offers an array of walks along dramatic cliffs and charming coastal villages. The trail near Dawlish Warren includes gentler sections suitable for all walking levels, with terrain including fields, tracks and roads with part of the route taking you right along the sea wall (weather permitting). For dogs who can’t resist the temptation of the sea, a short lead is recommended along his section.
A walk along the coast path promises that feel-good feeling of getting out in nature, and we may be biased, but we think South Devon offers some of the most scenic coast path sections. Can and see, then make up your mind.
For any coastal walks, pack water, sturdy walking shoes, and be mindful of the weather, as some parts of the path can be exposed to the elements.
Explore Haldon Forest Park
If you’re looking for a peaceful woodland retreat, Haldon Forest Park is a fantastic choice, popular with locals and tourists. Located about 30 minutes from Dawlish, Haldon offers a variety of walking trails through scenic forest landscapes. From short, gentle walks to more challenging loops, there’s a trail to ensure even the most energic of legs get tired.
As well as a fantastic selection of walking routes, Haldon also offers some more adrenaline-filled activities including Go Ape, however, we advise anyone with four-paws to give this a miss.
For a post-walk pick-me-up, the café offers a selection of drinks and treats. Parking is chargeable and can get very busy at weekends or during school holidays, so make sure to arrive early on those glorious Summer mornings.
Visit the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth
The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth has been a staple of the community for many years, offering free, wholesome fun for the whole family, including dogs. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the sanctuary grounds, where they can say hello to all the resident donkeys.
The on-site restaurant and café are also dog-friendly, so you never have to leave your pooch behind. Although entry is free, donations are always welcome to help with their mission to rescue and care for donkeys. Be sure to check out their popular upcoming events before your visit, most of them are free and appeal to a range of ages.
The sanctuary is open every day from 9am – 4pm, with the last entry to the car park at 3:30. No booking is required, simply turn up and enjoy. How simple!
Boat Trip on the River Exe
Brace your sea legs, it’s time for a boat trip. For a memorable experience, hop onboard a Stuart Line cruise for a dog-friendly nautical river cruise experience. These tours offer a unique way to experience Devon’s waterways and coastline, with plenty to see along the way, including local wildlife and historic estuary villages.
Boat trips typically run from Exmouth or nearby towns. While boast trips are regular, be sure to call ahead to check availability and confirm the dog-friendly policy to ensure smooth sailing. Once firmly back onshore, take some time to enjoy Exmouth’s coastline (or coffee shops).
Adventure to Dartmoor National Park
Dartmoor’s rugged terrain, vast moorlands, and rivers create a playground for dog-friendly Devon adventures. For a well-known walk suitable for the family, Haytor Rocks and Hound Tor offer a dose of spectacular scenery without roaming too far into the depths of the Moors.
If you plan to ramble off the beaten track, always be mindful of livestock and ensure you’re well prepared for all seasons in one walk, Dartmoor can be quite unpredictable with its weather.
After a day of exploring, nearby pubs and tearooms in towns like Ashburton and Princetown offer dog-friendly options for a well-earned rest and a treat for your pup.
