Christmas is all about spending quality time together – which means that at some point you’re going to want to get everyone outside in the fresh air. From easy seaside strolls to Boxing Day adventures, these coastal walks in Devon are perfect for the whole family. Press pause on squabbles over the TV remote, skip the Boxing Day sales (that’s why online shopping was invented) and enjoy Devon’s big skies and sea air on one of these coastline walks close to Hazelwood holiday park.
Why Devon’s coastline is perfect for a Christmas walk
There’s something magical about the Devon coastline at Christmas. The morning sun sparkles that bit brighter on the waves. Festive lights twinkle against night skies. The beaches are quiet. And when the weather rolls in, there’s nothing better than watching the waves pound the cliffs (from a safe distance – see our safety tips below).
Dawlish Warren and the Exe Estuary: festive strolls from Hazelwood
Dawlish Warren’s golden sands are just a stone’s throw from Hazelwood. A festive walk here is extra special thanks to the wading birds that flock to the Exe estuary in winter. It’s also a great spot to try out any new Christmas wheels, as there are lots of flat paved sections – perfect for children in buggies and older relatives too. Head for the peaceful sand dunes and nature reserve trails to let kids blow off some steam on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day. Then it’s back to Hazelwood for tea and a mince pie.
Dawlish Warren to Dawlish: sea wall and Christmas lights
One of our favourite coastal walks in Devon follows the flat two-mile path alongside the coastal railway to the seaside town of Dawlish. On one side, you get great views of South Devon’s famous red cliffs. On the other, waves crash dramatically against the sea wall. From Hazelwood, join the South West Coast Path, cross the railway bridge, then follow this Devon coastal path to Dawlish. Don’t miss the town’s famous black swans and the Christmas decorations. Stop for hot chocolate in one of the cafes, then retrace your steps or hop on the train back to Dawlish Warren. Check GWR’s festive railway timetable, as well as the weather forecast and tide timetable before you set out. Strong easterly winds cause waves to crash right over the sea wall at high tide.
Dawlish Warren to Exmouth: a full-day Exe Estuary Christmas adventure
The train ride from Dawlish Warren to Exmouth has stunning views of the Exe estuary. But on a crisp winter’s day, you can’t beat getting up close and personal with parts of this beautiful route on foot. Spot wading birds and wildlife, as well as the skeletons of shipwrecks at low tide. Start at Dawlish Warren beach, then follow the Exe estuary trail to Starcross. It’s a flat, easy-going route that’s especially enjoyable for families with older children. It follows a wide promenade at the start, before heading around the back of Cockwood Harbour. From here, pick up the signed trail again towards Starcross. The path runs parallel to the railway for much of the way, with sweeping views across the Exe estuary. At Starcross, jump on the train to Exmouth, where you can eat festive fish and chips while you watch the sun set. Then take the train back to Dawlish Warren. It’s around 3.5 to 4.5 miles from Dawlish Warren to Starcross, so allow around two hours walking, plus train time.
Devon’s best Christmas clifftop walks a little further afield
Want to explore more? Venture further afield and try one of these coastal walks in Devon as part of your festive getaway. Christmas bonus – these popular parts of the South West Coast Path are quieter in winter. Time it right and you’ll feel like it’s just you, the sea and the sky. With Hazelwood as your base, you can combine shorter strolls on relaxed days with one of these big day-out coastal adventures:
• Follow the cliffs from Hope Cove to Bolt Tail – around one and a half hours south of Hazelwood by car.
• Enjoy stunning sea views at the National Trust’s Little Dartmouth – just over an hour’s drive from Hazelwood.
• Combine an invigorating walk with a pub lunch in the village of Noss Mayo in the South Hams – about an hour from Hazelwood by car.
• Experience north Devon’s raw beauty on a breezy stroll from Lynton to the Valley of Rocks, about two hours away by car.
Safety tips for Boxing Day and New Year’s Day coastal walks
Check weather and tides before you set out. Sea walls and coastal paths are best avoided in strong winds, especially at high tide. Heavy rainfall increases the risk of cliff falls even after the clouds have cleared. Wear plenty of layers and sensible shoes that you don’t mind getting a bit muddy. Pack snacks (cafes might close early), a torch (the days are short) and a map (always handy).
