Did you know there are 26 miles of flat easy cycling from Hazelwood Holiday Park winding all the way around the Exe Estuary to Exeter and Exmouth with fantastic views all the way along the River Exe?

This tranquil and scenic environment is very popular with cyclists of all abilities and also walkers, bird-watching and fishing enthusiasts. Take a look at our guide to cycling in South Devon.

Person cycling whilst the sun sets

If you like wildlife you’ll be glad to know that the Exe Estuary is designated a ‘Special Area of Conservation’ and is a haven for rare birds, flora and fauna.

The Route 2 is very safe and you are very rarely sharing with vehicles so it’s great for kids.  You can download a map of the Exe Estuary Trail here.

If you don’t fancy the whole 26 miles you can take the passenger ferry  between Starcross and Exmouth (there is a small additional charge for bicycles).

The Exe River is also popular with kayakers and paddle-boarders.  Exe Adventures will take you on a guided trip and they will collect you and bring you back to Hazelwood.

What about Mountain Biking? Well that can be found at at Haldon Forrest Park just up the road, they have all sorts of cycle (and walking) trails from beginner to hard core ridge riding. Haldon Forest is a fantastic destination for an adventurous outdoorsy family day out. You can also try other activities such as Segway riding. Here are the details of Go-Segway. It is also the location for Go Ape a high ropes and zip wire experience through the trees. Haldon Forest has always been a very popular dog walking site with spectacular views and there are facilities including a cafe on site and plenty of car parking.

If BMX racing is more your thing then check out Decoy Park in nearby Newton Abbot, it’s a great family day out.  The trails here consist of a well maintained BMX race track and trails as dug and ridden by World Champion BMX Rider Kye Forte. They have even hosted the regional finals a few years ago. Have a look at this Youtube video to see riders in action on the trail:
