May is the Month for Merrymaking.

The seaside is bursting with shows, music and food festivals for you to enjoy, feast and make merry this spring. Toby’s Garden Festival at Powderham Castle.

May 3rd and 4th.

Set in the stunning grounds of Powderham Castle this festival is full of fascinating flowers and plants, and West Country artisan foods. Featuring  talks and demos with speakers including celebrities from TV’s Gardeners World, Joe Swift (Friday) and Frances Tophill (Saturday), sharing advice on tricky coastal gardens and garden design, and John Challis (Boycie from Only Fools and Horses). Visit the Artisan Marquee to see West Country crafters and the Knitting Tent where you can learn how to crochet a hanging planter. Furry friends are also welcome as the festival turns dog-friendly for the first time.

Exeter’s Festival of South West Food & Drink and Beats Music Nights.

Food & Drink – May 4th, 5th and 6th,  Exeter Beats – May 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

A family festival in the heart of Exeter set in the courtyard of Exeter Castle and the surrounding Gardens. Enjoy a day of indulging in top-notch South West food and drink including cookery demonstrations, workshops, stalls, live music throughout the day and activities for children. Following on in the evenings Exeter Beats live music events take place hosted by radio one DJ’s with top bands playing throughout the night, street food stalls and the all important Festival bar open until late.

BMAD – Bikers Make a Difference – Bike, Beer and Music Festival.

May 3rd to 5th.

Festival goers gather with an amazing array of thousands of bikes along the seafront at Paignton Green in Torbay’s English Riviera. Polish your bike and see if you can win the prize for Best Bike in show. Rock bands every day, beer and cider bars, and the bike show (on Sunday 11am to 1pm). Trade stands selling motorbike equipment and clothing. Show entry categories include classic and vintage, sports and custom bikes.

South Devon Railway’s Day Out With Thomas and the Spring Beer Festival

May 4th-6th (Day out with Thomas)

Take a ride with Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends for a day of family fun at South Devon Railway. Meet The Fat Controller and join in Thomas themed activities and more, including: Visit the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary, Explore the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, Re-enactments of classic Thomas stories with Thomas and The Fat Controller, Vintage Bus Rides, Vintage fairground rides, Miniature railway.

May 24th-27th (Spring Beer Festival).

The South Devon Railway is one of Devon’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the south west. The seven mile former Great Western Railway branch line winds along the scenic River Dart valley from Buckfastleigh to Totnes and runs steam trains with heritage rolling stock. Enjoy a wonderful day out at this all weather family attraction. The bar at Staverton will be open with a fantastic range of real ales, ciders, craft beers and more during the festival.

The Devon County Show

May 16th  to 18th.

With a packed programme of events everyday there is much to see and do at this showcase of all that Devon has to offer. This very popular local event is the biggest food fair in Devon with live cookery and acclaimed chefs, plus dog show, amazing animals, displays, crafts, gardens, show jumping, children’s farm, pets, vintage tractors and steam engines, craft beers and ciders, bees and honey marquee,

Dawlish Walking Festival and Arts Festival Week

April 27th to May 5th (Walking festival)

Join in on over thirty planned walks around the beautiful coast and hills of pretty Dawlish. Mostly free, choose from long rambles or short strolls including night walks, craft walks and other themes.

Outdoor Cinema Nights at Powderham Castle.

May 17th and 18th

Powderham Castle pop up cinema presents A Star Is Born (Friday 17th May) and Bohemian Rhapsody (Saturday 18th May). Outdoor fun in the delightful castle grounds, enjoy a drink under the starlit sky and snuggle up with a blanket to enjoy a blockbuster on the 3oft screen.
