Our Guide to a Day at the Races in Devon

Both Newton Abbot Racecourse and Exeter Racecourse are within 10 miles of Hazelwood Holiday Park.

Whether it’s a new interest or you’ve been a race-goer for some time, there is much fun to be had at South Devon’s two great race courses in Newton Abbot and Exeter.  

We are lucky enough to have national hunt racing twelve months of the year.  Newton Abbot racing in the Spring and Summer and Exeter in the Autumn and Winter.

Newton Abbot Racecourse – National Hunt Racing in the Summer!

Horse racing can be great fun for children and a memorable day out for all the family. With free entry for the kids under sixteen, a creche which is open on race days, and a brand new children’s play area created in the centre of the course, a day’s racing has something on offer for everyone, regardless of age.  To entertain the adults there are various bars and a carvery.

This Devon racecourse is a flat, oval, tight, left-handed circuit of about 1 mile and 1 furlong. There are seven fences to a circuit with a very short run-in, offering views from the Course and Paddock Enclosures, alongside the Family Enclosure which is situated in the centre of the course. If you’ve ever wondered what the horse’s view is like from around the course then take a look at this video where you can ride the course.

Exeter Racecourse – National Hunt Racing

Surrounded by beautiful Devon countryside, Exeter Racecourse is set in a stunning location in the middle of Haldon Forrest.  Racing at Exeter is a great family day out, with lots to do for everyone. Entry is free for under eighteens. The site has excellent facilities (including restaurants and bars).  Exeter racecourse is nearer Hazelwood but you will need to travel by Car or taxi.  

There are many fixtures and events planned throughout the Autumn racing season, starting with Devon Day on 26th November, some festive fun in December and not forgetting New Year’s day racing. You might want to up the game and take advantage of the private box and restaurant packages
